I’ve owned over a dozen pairs of Lululemon Aligns and four pairs of Athleta Salutation Stash tights. After three years of rotating them through yoga, grocery runs, and 10-hour workdays at a standing desk, here’s what nobody tells you: the Align is not a daily legging. And the Salutation might be the better buy for most people.
Why the Fabric Feels Different and Why That Matters
The Align uses Lululemon’s Nulu fabric — a buttery, brushed-knit nylon/lycra blend that feels like nothing on skin. The Salutation uses Athleta’s Powervita, which is a recycled nylon/spandex mix with a slightly tighter knit.
Here’s the catch: Nulu is fragile. I’ve had three pairs develop pilling between the thighs within 6 months of moderate wear. Powervita holds up significantly better — my oldest Salutations (two years, washed weekly) show almost no pilling.
Nulu is softer out of the box. Powervita is more durable over time. If you want a legging you can throw on for a flight, a workout, and a coffee run without thinking, Powervita wins.
Both fabrics are four-way stretch and squat-proof. But Nulu snags on rough surfaces (velcro, gym benches, even some washing machines). Powervita doesn’t.
The Feel Test
Rub the inside of a Salutation against your palm — it’s smooth but has a slight grip. The Align slides like silk. That grip in the Salutation means it stays put during downward dog without constant tugging.
Care Differences
I wash both in cold water, low heat dry. The Aligns need to be hung dry to extend life. The Salutations can survive a dryer cycle without visible damage. That’s a practical win for people who don’t want a separate laundry routine.
The Waistband Showdown: Which Stays Up

This is where the Align almost lost me. The original Align waistband (pre-2026) was perfect — high enough, gentle compression. The current version? It rolls down on me during forward folds and after a few hours of sitting.
The Salutation has a wider waistband (about 4 inches vs. the Align’s 3 inches) with internal elastic at the top. It stays flat against my stomach, no rolling, no digging.
Both are high-rise (roughly 10-11 inches front rise). But the Salutation’s waistband has more structure. If you carry weight in your lower belly, the Align’s waistband can fold over. The Salutation’s doesn’t.
One specific detail: the Salutation Stash has a hidden pocket in the waistband that fits an iPhone 14 Pro. The Align has zero pockets. For daily errands, that pocket makes the difference between carrying a phone or leaving it behind.
Compression Level
The Align is zero compression — it’s a second skin. The Salutation is light compression. Not enough to feel restrictive, but enough to hold everything in place. For a full day of wear, I prefer the Salutation. For sleep or gentle yoga, the Align wins.
When to Buy the Lululemon Align (and When Not To)
Buy the Align if: you want the softest possible fabric for low-impact activities — yin yoga, stretching, lounging in bed. You don’t mind replacing them every 12-18 months. You never need pockets.
Do not buy the Align if: you plan to wear them for walking, running errands, or anything involving friction. They will pill. You’ll be disappointed. I’ve seen it happen to three friends who bought them after my warning.
The Align is a specialty item. Treat it like cashmere — delicate, beautiful, not for daily abuse.
Price point: Aligns run $98-$118 depending on color. Salutations are $89-$99, and Athleta runs 20% off sales frequently. That price difference adds up over multiple pairs.
What Nobody Tells You About Sizing and Fit

I wear a size 6 in Lululemon (5’6″, 140 lbs, athletic build). In Athleta, I wear a size Small. The fit is nearly identical in the legs, but the Athleta waist is slightly roomier.
Here’s the failure mode: people size down in Aligns because they stretch out over a day. Don’t. If the Align feels loose after 4 hours, you bought the wrong size. A snug Align in the store will be perfect after 30 minutes of wear. A loose Align will sag by lunch.
The Salutation doesn’t stretch out significantly. What you feel in the store is what you get after a year.

My Verdict After Years of Wearing Both

If you can only own one pair of leggings for everything — work, travel, yoga, walking the dog — buy the Athleta Salutation. It’s more durable, has a pocket, stays up, and costs less.
If you already own a pair of durable leggings and want a second pair that feels like wearing nothing, buy the Lululemon Align. Just know its limits. It’s a luxury item, not a workhorse.
I still own both. But when I’m rushing out the door at 7 AM and don’t want to think about my clothes, I grab the Salutations every time. That’s the real test.
